Southwest Decor: Keep it Simple
Simple is elegant, easier, and most definitely
southwest style. The haciendas of yesterday and
today’s southwest are not overly furnished. Furnishings
hinge on the sparse side with plenty of room to maneuver
allowing the flow of sunshine and energy to permeate
throughout the home.
Styles are raw with
captivating and sometimes ornate carvings or woodwork
and this sparseness of decor allows these intricate
details known to southwest craftsmen to take center
stage.
Theme’s may include
Native American symbols such as the famed Kokopelli, zia
sun signs or any one of the Navajo Kachinas. Navajo rugs
are a popular addition to any southwest home while
providing a unique and colorful backdrop.
The Spanish influences
may include ironworks on the exterior and niches within
to enhance a foyer or hallway and sometimes contain
objects of religious significance.

Remember, one special
piece is more valuable in your decor than a cluttered
collection scattered haphazardly around the home. A
beautiful painting, a rug as mentioned above, a door or
wall painted in one of the colors of the desert palette.

Other pieces may be added
as time and budget permit. Keeping it simple will allow
you the ease of transforming your decor to southwest
style, will be easier on your budget, and will flow with
the look and tradition that is ultimately southwest.
