Canal, Scottsdale’s New Haute Cuisine Eatery, Fuses Food & Fashion
With A Dynamic Visual Identity By Nocturnal Graphic Design Studio

PHOENIX, AZ – Nocturnal Graphic Design Studio has provided their branding expertise to noted developer Fred Unger’s exciting new restaurant, Canal, located within Scottsdale’s dynamic SouthBridge corridor. The unveiling of the Canal brand is the latest on a distinguished roster of successful restaurant brand launches for the acclaimed Phoenix-based graphic design firm.

Canal is located in the heart of SouthBridge’s upscale shopping area The Mix – a collection of trendsetting fashion boutiques and eclectic shops, hand picked by successful retailer Jennifer Croll – and brings a sophisticated blend of haute cuisine and haute couture to Scottsdale. “Fashion is a key component to Canal, and visually the restaurant needed to feel like a seamless extension of The Mix, while maintaining a distinct identity of it’s own,” explains Nocturnal Creative Director, Ken Peters. Indeed, in addition to upscale dining Canal is designed to host a variety of fashion-themed events, and features a fashion runway snaking right through the dining room, with a state-of-the-art video wall backdrop. Nocturnal’s award-winning track record of successful brand development for some of the Valley’s most notable fashion boutiques and restaurants provided the insight needed to integrate these two worlds
into one unparalleled brand. Nocturnal worked closely with Mr. Unger and his team, including Executive Chef Justin Beckett, as well as with Ms. Croll, and project architects from Allen + Philp to ensure that the Canal brand met everyone’s needs and made the right emotional connection with consumers. “This project presented many unique challenges, but collaboration was very open, creative, and constructive”, says Peters. To visually articulate the fusion of food and fashion Nocturnal designed a sleek, sexy, ultra-modern visual identity reminiscent of contemporary fashion’s most elite labels.

The visual language of the brand is a study in contrasts. Soft, sophisticated hues anchored by warm, gray neutrals, and punctuated with bold harvest gold accents, pair with minimal geometric shapes creating an economy of color and form that is at once subtle yet dominant. Clean, contemporary typefaces mingle freely with flowing, hand-drawn script text on menus and other printed collateral, blending old and new with a refined approachability. Elegant photography in subdued tones ads depth and a touch of European flair with amorphous, metaphorical hints of flowers, shimmering water, delicate lace, glistening tableware, and exotic androgynous models. Branded graphic elements were applied to menus, uniforms, exterior signage, interior decor, carry-out bags and containers, gift cards,
comment cards, and more. To complement the printed brand Nocturnal, in conjunction with strategic partner Perk Develop, created a stunning web site (www.canalaz.com) which utilizes state-of-the-art technology to virtually convey the dynamic energy of the Canal experience. From print to pixel every consumer touchpoint was thoughtfully designed to create an indelible brand.

Nocturnal has also collaborated with a variety of other notable Valley restaurateurs, including Fox Restaurant Concepts on branding and visual identity development of their offerings The Counter, The Greene House, Montana Avenue, Blanco, Tacos & Tequila, and the Scottsdale Waterfront’s Olive & Ivy. Nocturnal has also developed branding for Patsy Grimaldi’s Pizzerias, in preparation for their national expansion, and has just completed branding and launch for Café Development Company’s new Mesa sports grill, Atomic 29, and is in the process of revamping and relaunching the brand for their Old Town Scottsdale concept, Café Carumba. In addition to the restaurant industry Nocturnal services a broad range of clientele in a variety of sectors including; hospitality, specialty boutique retail, and more. Through innovative thinking and creative design solutions Nocturnal helps it’s clients connect with consumers, build brand value and succeed.
