GALVESTON ARTS CENTER HOSTS NATION-WIDE MARDI GRAS
ART CONTEST 2009

Galveston, Texas - Galveston Arts Center and the
Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau are
pleased to announce an open competition for the design
of Galveston Island’s 2009 commemorative Mardi Gras
poster.
More than 250,000 people attend Mardi Gras! Galveston
each year to experience the party of a lifetime as the
island comes alive with 11 extravagant parades, more
than 50 galas, and festive events including bead
throwing, exhibits, live entertainment in local clubs,
and the best cuisine the Gulf Coast has to offer. The
annual event is one of the most popular in Texas and is
rich in history, celebration, and people watching. This
year’s festivities―the 98th celebration of Mardi Gras in
Galveston since 1867―will take place February 13—24,
2009.
The poster competition is open to anyone who wishes to
submit a design. It should include the words “Mardi
Gras! Galveston 2009”. The winning design will celebrate
the spirit of community evident in Galveston following
the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Ike. Designs must
be original works of art suitable for printing in a
poster format. All submissions will become the property
of the Galveston Arts Center and the Galveston Island
Convention and Visitors Bureau. The winning artist must
agree to assign the copyright to GAC/GCVB and attach no
other restrictions to the use of the image. The winning
design will be used to promote Mardi Gras! Galveston,
including but not limited to posters, brochures,
advertisements, and websites.
Deadline for submission is January 30, 2009. Entries
should be delivered to the Galveston Island Convention
and Visitors Bureau, c/o Melody Smith, 2504 Church
Street, Suite 200, Galveston, TX 77550, and should
include name of artist, contact information (including
address, phone number and e-mail address) and a brief
current resume. The winning design will be chosen by
members of the Galveston community. A portion of the
proceeds raised from the sale of posters will benefit
the effort to re-create the Galveston Arts Center.
