Make-up Over 40 for the Southwest

Although the Southwest is heavenly in some ways, when it comes to our skin, it can be brutal.  Living a life in the sun, heat, wind, can take it's toll.  The elements, combined with our own aging process, leave us in a position that may produce cosmetic needs somewhat different than those of our neighboring regions.

Following is a sample makeup routine that works well for over forty in the southwest:

Face

Moisturizing is our most important friend.

Any tubed cover-up in a nude shade for under-eye circles, blemishes, or scars.

Jergen's Natural Glow Healthy Complexion Daily Facial Moisturizer not only moisturizes but creates a natural looking color to your skin saving you from the heavy, cakey look of traditional foundations.  It is available for various skin tones and also provides an SPF of 20, keeping you protected all day long.  Between your own sun exposure and Jergen's Natural Glow, you will achieve a very "natural" look without having to apply a base. We may show a few more wrinkles, even chapping a times and we do not need a heavy liquid foundation settling into those creases in our skin and caking up. If desired, set with Physician's Formula talc loose translucent powder.

Next add Physician's Formula Organic wear® 100% Natural Origin Bronzer, for an allover glow and hint of bronzing.

Now add Organic Wear Blusher Pink Organics to cheeks, nose, forehead and chin for a healthy blush.  For extended needs: Contour according to the shape of your face, darker into the hollow area just below the cheekbone, lighter to highlight the cheekbone itself.  The goal is to create the illusion of a perfectly oval-shaped face.  Dark recedes, light brings out.  Blend with a cosmetic sponge as needed, paying special attention to the hairline and jaw-line where color changes are most noticable.

Eyes

Begin by first lining the eye but never line the entire eye, it is too harsh, and at over forty, we do not need any additional harshness to our faces, rather we need to "soften."  Unless you are a dark brunette or have black hair, try a nice sable or lighter brown, black is too harsh for any other coloring, unless as an exception, it is properly applied for evening wear.  Also depending on your coloring, a hint of sky blue, turquoise or green just above the pupil can add a nice affect if you want some color.  Use a SOFT liner pencil so that you can smudge, some come with a smudge sponge on the other end, this allows you control, and the ability to "soften" your look.  Never use liquid eyeliner, it is too harsh, messy, and cannot be corrected.  Cleopatra is an exception and the Egyptians used it to repel flies.  The goal with eyeliner is to "enhance" and "correct" giving the illusion of the perfect eye.

Because of the aging recession of the eyes, we may now have a natural shadow in the crease where previously we learned to "add" a darkened shadow there to make the eyes appear deeper set.  Guess what, after forty, they are! No need!  Dark eye-shadow can make it worse.  A "lift" of a hint of a darker shade just outside the edge of the eye serves to "raise" an aging droop without adding unwanted shadows in the crease.

For eye-shadows, begin with a very light colored shadow, NOT WHITE, NEVER WHITE, cream is nice, off-white is ok depending on your skin tones, but a light light beige is best.  Apply from lid to brow. Then apply a slightly darker shade to the outer corner as pictured for the "lift."

Lastly, apply your favorite mascara.  Black-brown is best unless you are a dark brunette or have black hair.  Brown if you are a fair blonde.

Lips

Lipsticks over forty get scary, mostly because of the wrinkles.  Dental work can become a factor as well.  As we age, a pucker begins and continues to tighten.  Dentures may worsen this problem.  We must not accentuate this by allowing color to "set" within the pucker lines.  A dry mat color will offer a long-lasting set and will not "run" into the tiny creases in the lips.  Lip color pencils are a good options though harder to apply.  Gloss is not for the over-forty crowd unless to highlight in the middle of the bottom lip using a light shade, one dab in the center, that's it.  The color will run into the creases.
