Sew a Southwest Patchwork Lap Quilt

(these instructions are for easy machine-quilting)

Materials you will need:

2 yards each of two colors of your choice, and for the backing in a shade to match. Or 2 yards of one and three of the other if you want to use one of the same for backing.

Do not select thin material, a heavier durable weight cotton is best, if the material is too thin, the quilt will not hold up long-term.

thread to match your colors

binding to match or you may make your own binding from the material.

Tape measure

quilting needles

large leather needle

quilting pins

masking tape

cardboard square for pattern

pin cushion

iron and ironing board

sewing machine

crib-size batting

Cut out a cardboard square for a cutting pattern. Measure 7" x 7". Cut 18 of one color and 17 of another. Sew all patches together, alternating colors with five to a row. When your top is completed, go to a hard surface and lay down your backing material. Next lay your batting on top of the backing, and lastly, lay your top on both. Using quilting pins, pin pieces together. Tape to surface with masking tape to hold in place. Cut away excess material from backing and batting to fit your top.

Quilting -

Now you may quilt a design, a square or you may use quilting ties. A large center square is quilted by machine sewing. Quilting ties are placed in the center of each square.

Binding - using either pre-made binding which was purchased or binding you have made yourself, it is time to bind the edges of your quilt. If you purchased pre-packaged binding, it is going to be tight ut will fit. Unfold and iron flat. Then iron a half-inch fold on each side. You will need enough to cover all four sides of your quilt. If making your own binding, measure out a 5 inch width for each piece then you will have plenty of width to work with. Give yourself at least two extra inches more on each of the four pieces of binding than the length and width of the quilt.

Place the fold wrong side facing the quilt top’s right side. Pin in place. Stitch across top of fold in a zig-zag along the top edge. Repeat on back side leaving ends open. Repeat on each side of quilt. Fold corner of end into right angle and stitch down. Repeat on all corners.

If you wish to add quilt ties, se a large leather-working needle. Thread with matching yarn, push needle through center of patch to back of quilt and pull through, repeat and pull through front of patch. Cut yarn to two inches and tie off. Repeat on each patch.
