The Yoga Zone

Welcome to the Yoga Zone at Southwest Flair! Because yoga is so popular in the southwest, we are including a regular yoga column for those who practice here in this wonderful region, so enchantingly perfect for yoga. I hope you will join us each month for asanas, meditations, anecdotes, inspirations and more!

The Yoga Bug

Fist of all, let me say that I am not a bug person, I am a dog person. If I had to pick a bug, it would be a caterpillar because at least some of them are furry. We all face challenges in our dharma and today I faced probably the largest challenge on the mat that I have as of yet. It was not a difficult pose nor deep breathing, it was of another nature. Yet in facing this challenge, I discovered, of the same nature as my being, simply another natural being.

As I sat in meditation, a water-bug or beetle, not sure which, came crawling out from under the bed and wound his way down towards the foot of my mat. I thought, oh no, what am I going to do, he is coming toward me. This was not a small bug. A familiar soft voice from within instructed gently: let this bug have this experience, so I sat perfectly still, remembering to breathe.

He came toward me onto the mat; all the way to my leg which he bumped into, then turned to his right and followed the outline of my pant-leg all the way down, round my foot, off the mat and lumbered back under the bed.

It was a great achievement in tolerance, patience, non-violence. I thanked him for the experience and sat in good feeling, appreciative of the bug, his efforts, and my own.

Yoga Doze

No time for a nap? Take a yoga doze. On the couch, in the bed, in the office chair, wherever you may sit or lie quietly. Ten, twenty minutes. Lie back, slightly propped. Hands on your diaphragm, and exhale, expelling on the air. Then take a deep breath, exhale again. Now, with hands remaining on your diaphragm, breathe normally, relax and rest. Feel your body relaxing with each breath, in and out. Feel the rhythm of your body as you breathe in and out, allowing it to lull you into a restful state. Tell yourself that you will arise in twenty minutes feeling rested and refreshed.
