Welcome to the New Scottsdale Fashion Square and the Opening of Barneys New York

On October 15th at 10:15a.m, Scottsdale shopoholics and food fanatics have many more reasons to celebrate. Barneys New York will officially be revealed at Fashion Square.  After two years of construction and anticipation, the wait will be over! The new store and Fred’s restaurant will not disappoint.

There are nearly twenty new retail shops in total that occupy the expansion with Barneys New York as the anchor department store. Some are old favorites, doing new things, like the Banana Republic store, which will introduce a new store concept. Some are just plain new to town, such as Arthur, a family-friendly clothing store and a market first that specializes in lounge wear for the entire family.  Then there are some that are making their global debut right here in the Valley: Microsoft is set to open late October.

The new wing will also welcome three sit down eateries to the addition. Modern Steak, another first to market concept by local favorite Sam Fox is not your typical steakhouse.  Modern Steak is being described as hip but comfortable and offers the best steaks in town.  The menu will offer new interpretations of familiar classics. From appetizers to quality meat and seafood dishes and exquisite salads and sides to irresistible desserts, Modern Steak is the place for business meetings or just a night out with family and friends. Modern Steak will be the first-to-market restaurant to provide a cocktail service, where personal mixologists will prepare a selection of fifteen signature drinks custom blended tableside. Modern Steak will even offer a walk up burger bar for those in a hurry.

Marcella’s Italian Kitchen will also make their debut in the valley for the grand opening as well. One can expect an urban burst of Italian energy upon entering the door. The menu is designed to transport guests to Italy with authentic dishes and wine reflecting the bold flavors of Italy. Menu items are meant to be shared, and include house specialties of antipasta, cured Italian meats, sausages and cheeses, classic Neopolitan stone oven pizzas and housemade pastas.

The third eatery will be located in Barneys New York, the infamous Fred’s. The hip café located atop Barneys, where chic shoppers can fuel up with fresh sandwiches, salads and maybe a glass of wine or champagne to celebrate a fabulous day at Scottsdale’s newest retail destination.

Other notable names that will call the east wing home are the following: J. Crew, True Religion, Michael Stars, Christian Audigier, Forever 21, Aqua Beachwear and Stash. Adding more range to what the center offers, from the couture stores already in place like Burberry, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, St. John’s and Cartier to new core retailers like Forever 21 and Love Culture.

Assistant Vice President of Property Management, Steve Helm said, “The expansion has given us the ability to bring in new retail and restaurants that are unique to Arizona. With over 225 stores and restaurants available, Scottsdale Fashion Square offers something for everybody.”

Choose the Muse
In celebration of the new wing’s opening, The Mannequin Is our Muse design project will be on display from Oct. 15 through 18. The unique art exhibit will showcase 100 fabulously designed mannequins, which will be voted on based on best design. Big names like Ed Hardy, Carolina Herrera and Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys, will have a designed mannequin participating in this art show along with local designer and celebrities. The winning mannequins will go on to be displayed at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), and the “Best in Show” winner will have a $5,000 donation in their name made to SMoCA.

The upper level 4,800 square foot brasserie, with interior designed by David Schefer and Eve-Lynn Schoenstein of David Schefer Design, LLC features a vaulted woodwork ceiling and a bay of wrap around windows offering eastern and mountain views. There is a separate porte cocher entrance, as well as an express elevator from the parking garage to take diners directly up to the restaurant, which will remain open for dinner after store closing. Italian-American (Traditional) cuisine with an emphasis on healthful local ingredients. Open for Lunch and Dinner, Monday-Friday. Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

Personal Shopping services will be offered to customers needing assistance with an entire wardrobe or help with time-saving expertise in any area of the store including fine jewelry, accessories, and gift giving. The service is complimentary and best arranged by appointment. Customers who use Barneys’ personal shoppers will be pampered within spacious residential-style suites equipped with lounges and private fitting rooms featuring Barneys’ luxe and eccentric mood-enhancing interiors.

The Architecture

In order to realize the Barneys vision for the new Scottsdale store, David New, Barneys New York’s Executive Vice President of Creative Services and his Store Design team collaborated on the project with global design firm Gensler. While the overall store design contains many of the signature features of Barneys New York stores, including long open floor plans, a gallery-like interior and monumental staircase, the Scottsdale store has its own character, including nods to the local environment. The exterior features Sierra stone with visible striations as a salute to the South West. The tonal gray, white and blue marble lends a cool and tranquil feeling to the main floor. Some original features of the store are the modern design of the monumental steel and glass sculptural staircase that connects the two floors and a glass box entryway on the facade, smoothly connecting outside to the inside. The flooring throughout is a notable design highlight: the spacious open layout shows off intricate geometric patterns and materials including mosaic tile and beautiful woods such as teak. Each floor has its own unique design and character and use of rich materials.

The Manager

Diane Schwartz is the vice-president and general manager of the store. She was formerly the department manager for women’s designer collections at the Barneys New York Las Vegas store.
