Skyrocketing Cost of Healthcare and Education?
The Treat Your Nerves to the Ultimate Musical
Vacation: Ellen M. Wilson's Hopeful and Healing Songs of
Ascent

CD Cover Songs of Ascent
Let’s face it, it’s tough to turn on CNN or read the
newspaper anymore.
Times are tough everywhere. President Obama keeps
repeating that this is the worst economy in decades, but
day to day nothing seems to change. Unemployment is
rising. Healthcare and education costs are out of
control. Banks and car companies are merging, declaring
bankruptcy and barely surviving. Even States like
California are on the verge of financial collapse.
But worrying won’t change anything. So maybe it’s time
to “treat your nerves to a vacation,” as T. Tamara
Weinstein of Feminist Review has suggested. In her
recent glowing write-up of Songs of Ascent, Weinstein
suggests that “Ellen M. Wilson’s, Songs of Ascent,
is the
perfect album for tense listeners in tense times.... a
balm that rarely comes packaged in CD form.”
The El Paso, Texas-based singer (she grew up in a
Chicago suburb) may not be able to solve your financial
straits, but she’s already soothing and healing the
souls of thousands who have been lifted by the inspiring
songs she sings. Drawing upon the words and wisdom of
the ancients, the songs on this album bring true hope
and healing to a world in need.

Ellen M. Wilson
Collaborating with producer and arranger Scott Leader,
the multi-talented vocalist—whose sound has been praised
by many as “angelic” and “ethereal”--transcends all
cultural and religious boundaries with rich and colorful
interpretations of ten compelling songs whose composers
(including Debbie Friedman, Julie Silver, Robbi Sherwin,
and Leader) set Hebrew phrases from the Bible and Jewish
liturgy to music.
While the genesis of Songs of Ascent was Wilson’s
meeting Leader during a recording project, the message
of healing and peace in its songs—which she sings in a
mix of English and Hebrew--tap into a universal
consciousness that connects with people of all faiths,
belief systems and world-views. Because the need for
healing and the desire for peace is something everyone
on the planet has in common, songs like “Eil Na R’fa Na
Lah” (which translates in our vernacular to “Heal Now I
Pray!”), “Lo Yisa Goy” (“An End To War”) and Lesser’s
uplifting folk tune “Healing Song” are reaching people
in exciting ways that stretch beyond their origins.
As Weinstein concludes in her review, “In a world where
more and more of us are reverberating from the harsh
echoes of economic crises, violence, and fears for the
future, one may wonder: is life still worth celebrating?
Songs of Ascent answers this question in the
affirmative, and in doing so, truly lives up to its
name.”
