Annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian
Ceremonial
One of Summer’s Top Events

One of New Mexico’s major summer events, the 89th annual
Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in the City of Gallup and
at nearby Red Rock Park, is August 11-15, 2010.
Since 1922, the people of Gallup have been proud to
present the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial each summer.
A unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Native
American arts, cultures, and traditions, “Ceremonial,”
as it is known throughout the region, is a special time
when indigenous peoples from throughout the United
States, Canada, and Mexico travel to Gallup to share the
best of their creative and performing talents and
diverse heritages with the rest of the world, and to
reunite with other indigenous groups.
Nowhere else can you experience tribal ceremonial
dances, a contest pow-wow, indoor and outdoor arts and
crafts markets, all-Indian rodeos, a world-class juried
art show, opportunities to buy authentic Native American
art and jewelry, parades, Native American foods, a
ceremonial queen contest, and crafts demonstrations, all
in one location at one time.
The rainbow of colors, the rich rood smells, the red
rocks, and the drumbeat all come together under the hot
desert sun, to create the unique atmosphere.
Collectors of Indian Art at the Ceremonial are assured
of authenticity with every purchase. The Ceremonial is
also known world-wide for its criteria for quality of
every object on display and available to collectors.
The Ceremonial hosts a variety of All-Indian rodeo
events, featuring professional and amateur contestants,
while the downtown parades feature dancers, tribal
royalty, horseback riders, the Miss Ceremonial
contestants in all their pageantry, Navajo Code Talkers
from World War II, and tribal bands, just to name a few
of the parade participants.
The Contest Pow-Wow is rated among the best in the
country, with dancers and drum groups from across the
United States. There are also opportunities for visitors
to participate in social and inter-tribal dances, which
occur throughout the Pow-Wow.

“The Ceremonial gives New Mexicans and their visitors a
genuine cultural experience with family and friends,”
said Michael Cerletti, Secretary of the New Mexico
Tourism Department. “It represents what it means to be a
Native American, and is a cultural experience cherished
and treasured by its many visitors. It is a highlight of
New Mexico’s annual calendar of events, one not to be
missed.”
