Flight of Folds – the sculpture of
Kevin Box
Opening Reception, July 9th, 5 - 8 p Show runs through
July 14th -
Selby Fleetwood Gallery, Santa Fe
Kevin Box casts bronze so delicate it looks like paper.
Cranes, ponies, planes, boats, stars - his bronzes
resemble origami and are rich with meaning. Locals may
be most familiar with the large bronze Box-Cullar
collaboration, “Rock Paper Scissors” which stands
outside Selby Fleetwood Gallery at 600 Canyon Road. In
this show, the artist unveils his latest works,
including a 21 inch tall bison. The show at Selby
Fleetwood Gallery, opens with an artist’s reception on
Friday evening, July 9th, from 5 – 8pm.
For Box, the choice to emulate the look of paper in his
bronze works is very deliberate. Paper is receptive,
blank, open. It willingly accepts our ideas. To Kevin
Box, the receptive nature of a blank sheet of paper,
rich with possibilities, is a metaphor for the human
soul.
The artist begins his work in paper. He folds, crimps
and smoothes his paper maquettes, creating not only
objects, but also intricate patterns of lines and
creases. In this way, the paper itself becomes a unique
revelation. Once he is satisfied with an experiment, the
paper is then cast into bronze, aluminum or stainless
steel. Box’s sculptures range in size from miniature to
monumental. His work is both playful and profound.
Selby Fleetwood Gallery has represented Kevin Box since
2008. The gallery is located in a 250-year-old building
at the corner of Canyon Road and Camino Escondido, in
Santa Fe. The natural adobe walls and lush sculpture
garden provide a beautiful backdrop for Box’s elegant
work.
Gallery owners and staff are delighted to share the
innovative work of this talented young sculptor with the
public. Images of Box’s sculptures are online at
www.selbyfleetwoodgallery.com. The reception on July 9th
begins at 5. Questions can be directed to the gallery at
505.992-8877.

On Friday afternoon, July 9th, Dr. Robert Lang, an
internationally recognized expert on Origami, will join
Kevin Box at Selby Fleetwood Gallery. Dr. Lang designed
the paper version of the white bison which Box later
created in bronze. The two will talk about their
collaboration from 4-5pm Friday evening. An additional
presentation will be given on Saturday, July 10th. Call
the gallery for times.
