SANTA FE, N.M. – Located in the heart of
Santa Fe, where historic crossroads intersect Native
American traditions and reverence for Mother Earth
and Father Sky stands the Inn and Spa at Loretto. On
May 9, the Inn brings its past and present full
circle by celebrating its 2nd annual
Native American blessing ceremony. Conducted by
Walatowa (also known as Jemez) Pueblo Elders Flo and
Sal Yepa, the ceremony uses song, dance and prayer
to invoke spiritual guidance and blessings to honor
mothers in attendance. The one-hour ceremony will
begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Inn’s garden and is
free and open to the public. Cultivating a
passion for traditions, Luminaria will also serve
its 2nd annual Mother’s Day Brunch
elegantly boasting a savory assortment of modern
American dishes garnished with southwestern flair.
For guests interested in a weekend getaway, hotel
rates are available starting at $199.
Mother’s Day Blessings Ceremony
The Inn is privileged to have
Flo and Sal Yepa,
members of the World Council of Elders,
lead the blessing.
They are highly respected wisdom keepers,
storytellers and folklore musicians of the Walatowa
nation, one of the oldest surviving indigenous
cultures in New Mexico, also known for their
beautiful pottery. Sal and Flo have shared their
non-denominational earth-honoring ceremonies with
people from all walks of life, including the Dali
Lama, National Jewish Conference, Heart of Healer’s
Foundation and the World Council of Elders Sundance.
Sal and Flo Yepa
along with other tribal dancers and singers will be
dressed in traditional ceremonial attire to perform
a medley of prayers, songs and dances requesting
spiritual guidance and blessings for all mothers in
attendance. Some of the ceremonial dances performed
will include the ‘Friendship’ dance; an interactive
dance that encourages guests to dance along with
tribe members, and the closing ‘Blanket’ dance, an
opportunity for guests to place their donation on
the blanket in appreciation. Drumming, considered by
many to mimic Mother Earth’s heartbeat, will also be
used during the ceremony. To learn about Native
