Mindful Holiday Eating
Keep
it red or green!
A big part of the holiday season is to enjoy the wide
array of holiday dishes served up and is one of the
favorite things about the season. Many of our
favorite dishes are only prepared and served during the
holiday season. Family gatherings and social
events also offer many culinary delights that would not
otherwise be available throughout the year. We
want to enjoy and partake, yet mindfully.
Heavy holiday foods laden with sugar, calories, rich
creams and butters, sauces and pastries can bring added
weight gain, sluggishness, skin problems and many other
afflictions associated with these types of dishes so it
is important to retain consciousness of what we are
consuming and how far we may be straying from our normal
diet even if it is a once-a-year treat.
Here are some tips on eating mindfully throughout the
holiday season:

If preparing dishes at home, cut corners and
calories where possible using low-fat dairy
products.

In many recipes for cakes and breads that
sometimes call for large amounts of sugar, it is
possible to cut the sugar in half and still retain
the sweetness necessary to compliment the recipe.
If a cake or bread recipe calls for two or more cups
of sugar, try cutting the sugar in half.

If watching your weight, weigh before you go out
as a reminder and weigh as soon as you return home.

Stick with red and green foods for a festive,
yet healthy, change. Apples (red or green),
grated red cabbage as an additive to salads, red or
green bell peppers, red or green chilies, watermelon
if available, any green veggies like broccoli, green
beans, asparagus; tomatoes are red and healthy.
Red beets pickled in vinegar. Don't forget the
relish: olives are red and green, pickles.
Red onions as a garnish or in a salad. Get
creative and stick to the red and the green.

Order child-size portions at restaurants or
share a platter with a friend so that you do not
leave feeling full and miserable.

Have a healthy snack before leaving the house,
you won't eat as much holiday food later on.

Remember beverages have calories too, especially
holiday drinks like eggnog.

Eat slowly, breathe between bites, and enjoy the
act of nourishing your body with this scrumptious
holiday cuisine.
