Why
Shop in Albuquerque?

There are many
great cities to shop in around the southwest and
though it doesn’t carry the shopping clout that
Dallas, Aspen or Scottsdale offers, there are a
few special reasons to shop in Albuquerque while
you are there. The weather, the layout, the
view, and the unique shops. |
Even if it’s thirty
degrees in Albuquerque, they can boast three-hundred and
ten days of sunshine per year. It is a beautiful city to
get out and stroll and shop. The air is crisp and dry,
the sky is New Mexico blue. The weather is especially
enjoyable if you are shopping in Old Town or Nob Hill
(near UMN) because you will be out and about. Sidewalk
cafes abound filled with all sorts of colorful New
Mexican personalities. Window shopping offers some most
unusual dressing and you can easily dart in and out of
shops. It doesn’t get much better than shopping and
walking up Central Avenue, stopping for a cold brew or
Mexican lunch, and enjoying the shopping culture.
The layout of Albuquerque
makes it even easier to shop and get around. Albuquerque
is a big square and all of the streets run either
north/south or east/west, it’s that simple. The shopping
areas are also easy because they are in a few select
areas of town:

Louisiana Blvd - the state’s largest shopping
destination including Coronado Center (with 150 shops)
and the newly opened Albuquerque Uptown outdoor mall.
No matter where you are
at in the city, the view of the Sandia Mountains will
follow you throughout the day, adding a little extra
refresher each time you glance up.
The shopping areas and
shops themselves are some of the most unique anywhere in
the country, much in part because of the abundance of
Native American crafts-people and in part due to the
strong influence of the University of New Mexico and its
hip sub-culture which took off in the sixties and has
lost little in time translation today. Hippie shops are
on every corner near UNM, catering to the collector, the
whimsical, the rebellious and the creative. Nob Hill
grew out of this sub into its own upper scale, yuppie
shopping area, drawing on the "meat" of the university
shopping area, expanding to the newer clientele in the
city because of its economic growth. In old town,
purchases can be made directly from the Native American
artists who line the portal of the square daily with
their wares.
An added bonus, the Whole
Foods store in Albuquerque near Academy and Wyoming is
one of the best anywhere. In addition to the
sub-cultural climate, their stock includes many local
specialties such as handmade soaps, candles and incense.
Worth the stop.
For superior southwest
shopping, Albuquerque is hard to beat!
