The Neti Pot

A Neti Pot from the Himalayan
Institute
Yoga is more than just poses, or asanas, it is a way of
life. It is choices that we make each day to
better ourselves. Making choices for better health
lead to the ability to achieve yogic oneness or union,
if our bodies are healthy we are in a position to obtain
higher consciousness. Total perfect health in
body, mind and soul.
One great way to keep yourself in good health is with a
neti pot. An ancient cleansing of the nasal
passages originating in India, using a neti pot will
keep germs and bacteria flushed out of your nasal
cavities and sinuses.
What is a neti pot? It is a small pot resembling a
teapot and can be purchased at health food stores, drug
stores, even Wal-Mart in anything from plastic to
ceramic. Some pots will come with a prepared
saline solution, or the solutions may be purchased
separately or you may prepare the solution yourself at
home using 1/4 teaspoon of finely ground UN-iodized
salt. Fill the neti pot to the line or about 2/3
full of lukewarm water, remember this water is going to
go through your nose so you don't want it hot, just
comfortable. Stir the sale solution and mix well into
the water. Standing at the sink, pick the neti pot
up by its handle and tilt your head to one side and
using the spout, place it in the top nostril allowing
the water to flow in. Water will easily flow
through your nasal passage and out the other nostril.
There is no discomfort other than a slight sensation to
swimming and getting a little water in your nose.
Any clogging in the passages will wash out freely.
Turn head and repeat on other side. That's it, it's so
simple and effective.
Doctors are beginning to recommend this ancient
cleansing routine, even stating that it can be as or
more effective than antibiotics for a sinus infection.
If you are suffering from a cold or sinus infection,
daily use can bring a relief that cannot be attained
otherwise. And for day-to-day cleansing, it just makes
good sense, just like brushing your teeth or bathing.
Just try it once, you don't have to do it again if you
don't like it, but you will if you can just get past the
initial psychological fears and images.
