Cities around Colorado consistently end up on the
lists of best places to live and work, mostly because of
the unique outdoor recreational activities that abound.
With August comes the close of summer and the time
has never been better to get up, go outside and explore
this great state.
Colorado’s natural landscape offers its residents a
variety of ways to get in shape while having fun with
friends and family. Below are eight great ways to burn
calories in Colorado.
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer and head to
Colorado’s 26 ski resorts for a fun filled day on
the slopes, take a ride on a lift, picnic or just enjoy
the view.
Go for a nature walk or hike in one of Colorado’s
nine National Parks and Monuments. View the abundant
flora and fauna. Mesa Verde National Park, the Great
Sand Dunes National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park
and the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument all
have excellent trails and opportunities for rock
climbing, biking and even water activities. Explore the
state’s rich prairie heritage by hiking the Pawnee
Buttes at the Pawnee National Grassland in Northeast
Colorado.
Strap on your helmet and ride like Lance
Armstrong. Almost anywhere you go in Colorado,
you’re bound to find some of the best road cycling in
the country. Try the Santa Fe Trail from Trinidad to La
Junta.
Hit the links at one of Colorado’s hundred or more
golf courses. This time, skip the cart or caddy and
walk the greens for an extra workout.
Take on the whitewater rapids in Colorado’s many
rivers. Spend the morning kayaking or whitewater
rafting; it’s a great upper body work out.
Hop on your mountain bike and experience the
hundreds of miles of singletrack winding across the
state. Fruita, Crested Butte and Breckenridge are great
starting points for your trek.
Join the race, Colorado offers runners unlimited
opportunities to strut their stuff. Try the Bolder
Boulder 10K, the Denver Marathon or the Mt. Sneffels 1/2
Marathon in Ouray.
Climb your way to good health at one of
Colorado’s outstanding rock climbing destinations. From
a beginners climb at the Garden of the God’s in Colorado
Springs to the ultimate climbing challenge, the Black
Canyon of the Gunnison National Park near Montrose,
there is something for everyone, no matter your skill
level.
