The dreamcatcher is a tradition that began with the Native Americans.  It is said that a dreamcatcher is to be hung over the bed to sort your dreams.  The good dreams are supposed to flow through the catcher.  It is believed that if you put feathers on the catcher it will help guide the good dreams down to the peaceful sleeper.  The bad dreams are meant to get caught in the catcher and parish.

How to make a Dreamcatcher:
(Watch the video for instructions)

Supplies Needed:  [insert “1-supplies” here]

1 Metal ring

Sinew (about three yards or less depending on the size of the ring)

Leather

Clothespin

Scissors

Any decorations you might want (i.e. feathers, beads, charms, etc)

1. Take your ring and wrap your leather tightly all the way around your ring; using the clothespin to hold your leather in place at the beginning.  When you reach the beginning with your leather tie it off, tightly; then use excess leather to tie a knot above first know (to hang the catcher by).

2. Take your sinew, (best if kept in the bundle to avoid knotting), and tie a knot at the top where your leather is knotted.  Then consistently wrap your sinew, in fair spacing, by winding the sinew around the ring one time and bringing the sinew back through the strand to make it knot. (Best if sinew is tucked between the strands of leather, so there is no visibility). Do this all around your ring.

When you reach where you started, you then put your sinew through your first stitches (in the middle of the stitch) and back through.

Repeating the process as you did on the first round.  Continue this process all the way around your catcher until you reach the very middle (Leaving a small hole in the net for the dreams to flow through).  Tie your catcher off by looping the sinew through and knotting it (best if done twice).

3. Cut off excess sinew (be careful not to cut any sinew netted in the catcher).

4. Decorate the dreamcatcher to your liking with any feathers, beads, leather, etc.  (You may also string beads into your catcher’s netting)
