reception, she will be painting and demonstrating in pastels on

Old Timers has been an annual event for over 30 years. Magdalena is
a busy village on this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There
is a rodeo for children, another for old cowboys 50 years and older,
street dance, theater, arts and crafts, barbecue, pancake breakfast,
New Mexican food, Navajo fry bread, parade and much more. Jo has been drawing and
painting as long as she can remember. Her vivid and
descriptive paintings are created from recollections of
living and traveling in much of North and South America.
Recently, Jo has been working to create a more interactive
presence on the world wide web. A current trend, for many
artists, is to create a painting a day and offer them on a
blog.
Jo started a blog in June of 2006. Her blog is a daily
commentary and includes photos of her paintings, sketches
and hints or demos about art. Reading the blog is an
excellent way to see the artist's new work and how it is
developed. |

Jo's web page has a new section devoted to plein air (painting
outside from life). Travel presents many opportunities for plein
air. It is a challenge to set up an easel and paint a scene in just
a couple of hours. Jo says, "The light is very fleeting and you have
to get down large sections of light and dark very quickly to
establish your painting. Weather doesn't always cooperate and
uninvited visitors like mosquitos or snakes are not uncommon.
Animals and birds get used to artists as they are so still." Jo
enjoys painting plein air right in her back yard. "The paintings for
this show are areas dear to my heart in the Magdalena area and at
home in the Lost Pines.
Jo and Gene, her spouse, travel every summer to escape the intense
heat and humidity in Bastrop. New Mexico is the vacation spot of
choice the last few years as Gene's mother, Frances, is 90 and in
frail health. Before that it was off to Canada from Nova Scotia to
British Columbia. They lived in Bolivia, Peru and Chile and traveled
extensively in all of South America. Three of their four children
live in the Austin area and one son and his family live in Kentucky,
which makes travel across the United States obligatory.
The exhibit will be at Peppers through August. Some of Jo's work is
available at Peppers Art Gallery in Magdalena on a permanent basis.
