Playgrounds for the rich and famous?  Well maybe, but likely you won’t mind a few cheerleaders from the Phoenix Suns.  Too ritzy to really enjoy?  Not really.  Arizona spas have it all and in our ongoing series on spas, we will take a look at some of the top spas not only in Arizona, but in the southwest, with offerings ranging from co-ed to the nitty-gritty spirit of the old West, to organic foods to moonlit massages.  Whatever your tastes, needs or budget, chances are there is a spa in Arizona that will offer just what you are looking for, and a lot more.

First stop in Scottsdale, The Lamar Everyday Spa where you may take a trip without leaving town

You survived the Holidays and the new year but while you were busy taking care of your families, you ran out of time and energy for each other. What you need is a week on a sunny island to reconnect, but you used all your vacation during the holidays. Escape may be closer than you think, thanks to a new trend: the coed spa.

Traditionally, spas have been segregated into "his and hers" sides, so spending a spa day together was a bit of a challenge. A new breed of co-ed spas is breaking down the barriers so couples can enjoy massages, steam room, sauna, whirlpool, swimming and lunch, all without losing sight of one another.

"Our Trip For Two has become one of our most requested spa packages," says Heidi Lamar, owner of The Lamar Everyday Spa in Scottsdale. The package, which includes a side-by-side massage for two in the couple's suite, two facials and two body wraps or scrubs as well as all day use of the facilities, for $550, is like a mini vacation without the jet lag. A gourmet pool-side spa lunch can also be added for $15 per person.

A skilled massage therapist can untie weeks worth of knots, in just an hour and a well trained aesthetician can smooth out quite a few years' fine lines too. An Algae wrap works miracles, detoxifying your system and a Body Scrub can give you back the baby soft skin you forgot you had. Mud wraps are a wonderful way to fight winter dryness while tightening and toning your skin too.

Soaking in the whirlpool, sitting in the sauna, or steaming with your sweetie, can make even a few hours feel like a real vacation. You may only be a few miles from home, but your troubles will seem much further away when you are splashing in the pool!

With the many luxurious spas located throughout the southwest, you and your partner may now take a trip without ever leaving home.  In the Phoenix area contact The Lamar Everyday Spa in Scottsdale or consult your directory for a spa near you.  For more information on The Lamar Everyday spa, please visit www.thelamar.com

Now on to the new spa at The Rancho De Los Caballeros

Rancho de los Caballeros captures the spirit of the West. Its new ranch spa is no exception. Heading into its 59th season, the historic guest ranch opened its spa in October with an alluring menu of services and the same level of hospitality guests have come to expect at Rancho de los Caballeros.

The Rancho de los Caballeros spa is located in an authentic 1940s ranch house, restored to ensure that the essence of the West remains. Antique furniture gives the spa a cozy, home_like presence and Western artwork by local artists adds color. A variety of textures and fabrics add to the warmth and historical details with lace sheers covering windows and woven rugs located throughout the spa.

Eight treatment rooms, including two couples suites, are spread out between the main ranch house and its companion guest house. All rooms have private entrances and most have courtyards where guests may choose to have their treatment outdoors surrounded by the beauty of the desert tranquility.  In the living room of the main ranch house, antique Singer sewing machines double as manicure tables. The sun room serves as the reception area and boutique where guests can purchase products used by therapists in their spa treatments.

The spa offers a variety of services including body treatments, massages, manicures and even customized pedicures with a personal choice of foot baths, lotions and wraps. Therapists use an Italian line of spa products called “Comfort Zone” in all treatments as well as herbs grown on-site at the ranch. A forty-foot wide circular, hand-placed stone labyrinth offers guests a serene place for guided meditation. A fifteen-minute journey through the labyrinth is sure to bring mental clarity, balance and tranquility. For more info visit www.sunc.com

On to The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa, Carefree, Arizona

With an organic menu, cooking class and produce already available, The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa recently began its transformation into an all‑organic resort. The resort will soon begin implementing large‑scale gardens on the grounds that will produce a variety of produce, herbs and spices for the resort=s kitchens and provide an organic in‑room dining menu to guests.

Currently, resort guests and local residents can enjoy Scottsdale=s first all natural farmers market at the resort=s festival marketplace, el Pedregal. On Friday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m., the el Pedregal Fresh Marketplace exclusively features seasonal produce from local farmers that is either certified organic, non‑certified organic in practice, Natural Grown TM or pesticide free. This new fresh marketplace, which was unveiled in March 2006, includes musical performances and chef demonstrations in addition to farm‑fresh produce. Resort guests can drop off their market purchases at The Boulders= restaurant, where they can enjoy their hand‑selected produce incorporated into a gourmet meal that evening.

The resort has also launched a new series of spa cooking classes B Light and Easy Cooking Classes. These two‑hour interactive classes, offered on the first Saturday of every month (excluding the summer), focus on healthful organic cooking and are open to both area residents and resort guests. The Boulders Resort hired Chef Wendy Little as the resort=s new chef de cuisine. Chef Wendy brings more than 14 years of experience in organic cooking to the resort and already has implemented an all‑organic menu at the resort=s signature award‑winning restaurant, Latilla. The resort=s Golden Door Spa has also introduced a new Organic Wine List. A new spa sommelier will guide spa‑goers in their choice of wine, taking into account personal tastes and food pairings. Spa goers can enjoy Zen Harmony, the spa=s signature facial that uses the delicate Japanese Shiatsu method of stimulating energy channels. The Travelers Tonic Bath is designed to encourage circulation and stimulate the mind and body with refreshing lemon‑lime and rosemary essential oils, and lavender bath salts to restore the weary traveler to vibrant health.
