R.C. Gorman Estate
Becomes The Yaxche School
The Taos home and gardens of
the late Navajo artist, R.C. Gorman, have been purchased
by The Yaxche School. Yaxche is an independent private
school that offers grade levels from Pre-Kindergarten
through 8th grade. The Yaxche community needs to
relocate because their current space in "downtown" Taos
is being sold. When searching for a new permanent
campus, the school's board of directors hoped to find a
location with interior and exterior spaces that would be
sufficient for the school population while offering a
safe, creative Taos environment for the children.
Another goal was to create a "green" building and
grounds. When the renovation is complete, the school
will be the first LEED certified school in New Mexico.
R.C. Gorman's former art studio, with a view of the Taos
Mountain, will now be the art studio for the school.
The mission of the Yaxche
School is to provide an excellent educational experience
based on high level academics, the arts, service
learning, emotional intelligence, diversity of
population and green environmental experiences. A main
tenet is to keep class size small so the teacher to
student ratio remains low. The outstanding teaching and
administrative staff is able to meet the individual
needs of the students and in turn the children
experience an educational environment that allows them
to work towards their potential as individuals.
The Yaxche School is a project
that exemplifies the best of Taos, New Mexico. Children
representing the various cultural backgrounds of the
area thrive in a warm and positive setting. Taos is a
growing community and many families want the educational
environment that Yaxche offers for their children. As
with all non-profit organizations, the Yaxche School is
interested in connecting with individuals and groups who
would like to support its mission and help this unique
project in Taos grow. Student sponsorships are an
excellent way to support the school. Also, with the
purchase of the estate, Yaxche acquired several pieces
of functional art work that are now for sale. Anyone
interested in seeing the estate, supporting the school,
and purchasing these items can contact the school at
575-751-4419. All of the proceeds will go towards
scholarships and the green renovation of the campus.
Please visit the web site at www.Yaxche.org for more
information.
The estate is a landmark of
creativity in Taos. With the current transformation the
community hopes to foster positive growth in Taos for
years to come.
