Discover Invigorating Treatments in the Sonoran Desert

In our continued look at southwest spas, this month we take peek at some invigorating treatments designed to awaken not only the body but the senses, as well as some unique and unusual experiences.

Heated golf balls relieve stress? Coffee stimulates the lymphatic system? Wine moisturizes the skin? In Scottsdale, spa goers can experience these unique elements incorporated in an array of distinctive, invigorating treatments offered in more than 25 resort and day spas. Known as the premier spa oasis in the Southwest, Scottsdale features treatments with influences from Asia, Europe and South America as well as native inspired therapies. Indigenous elements – Arizona river rocks, Sonoran Desert clays and muds, Arizona-grown honey, and desert herbs – and everyday items – fresh limes, aromatic eucalyptus, purple amethyst and natural oats – are used to pamper, relax, detoxify and reinvigorate spa guests. Following is just a sampling of the one-of-a-kind treatments that Scottsdale’s luxurious spas offer guests.

AWAKEN THE SENSES

The Phoenician’s Centre for Well-Being offers a cup of joe for your skin. The Green Coffee Body Treatment begins with a stimulating Green Coffee lotion spread over the body that is derived from un-roasted South American coffee beans, stimulating the lymphatic system. A warm wrap helps the skin absorb the nutrients and a soothing neck and scalp massage completes the service. This treatment is rich in anti-free radicals that reduce the appearance of cellulite by naturally detoxifying the cells in the lower layer of the skin.  www.thephoenician.com

A TOUCH OF ORANGE BLOSSOMS

Inspired by the scent of blooming citrus trees peppered throughout the grounds, the Alvadora Spa at the Royal Palms Resort created the Orange Blossom Body Buff treatment. The orange blossom scent comes from neroli, the fragrant bitter orange blossom that produces one of the most cherished and expensive oils in the botanical kingdom. The benefits are exceptional for hydrating, soothing and oxygenating dry, sensitive skin as well as supporting the skin’s natural renewal process. The treatment begins with a Turkish salt applied to the entire body with long gentle strokes, followed by a thermal mineral bath gel. After a quick shower rinse, a nourishing body lotion is applied and the face is misted with neroli water. The guest is then gently wrapped in towels while enjoying a scalp and neck massage with neroli oil.  www.royalpalmsresortandspa.com

CENTER MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

Spa Avania at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch offers the Aroma Mineral Massage, which is a uniquely holistic blend of Esalen, Thai and Swedish techniques centering the mind, body and spirit. Different semi-precious gem stone balms are used depending on the time of day the treatment is given. Sunrise Balm is a blend of rhodochrosite extract and precious oils of grapefruit and orange designed to awaken the body. Midday Balm, a malachite extract in a blend of precious oils containing bergamot and mint, is designed to balance. Sunset Balm blends smithsonite extract and precious oils of patchouli and vanilla to prepare the body for sleep. Each of these balms works with the natural biorhythmns during these specific times of the day.  www.spaavania.com

THE POWER OF FLOWERS

The Red Flower Ritual offered by the Golden Door Spa at The Boulders Resort is a progressive body treatment that combines the therapeutic properties of flower oils and fruit essences with rich minerals and Asian-inspired massage. This Japanese bathing ritual uses cherry blossoms, mimosa, plum, passion flower and evergreen to transport the guest into a world of total balance. The treatment is enhanced by energy-point pressure, bamboo and rice bran exfoliation, a powerful anti-oxidant and Asian silk.  www.goldendoorspa.com

WINE IS NOT JUST FOR DRINKING ANYMORE

Derived from one of the most powerful anti-oxidants found in nature, Chardonnay grape seed extract, The Chardonnay Sugar Body Glow at The Spa at Gainey Village doesn’t just relax the mind but is known to completely relax the body. This treatment uses a pure sugar cane and wine scrub to smooth out rough spots, while shea butter and fine oils soften and protect the skin. After a velvety bath gel with a refreshing bouquet of pomegranate to condition the skin, an application of Chardonnay Body Butter with a hint of grapefruit is applied to seal in moisture.  www.thespaatgaineyvillage.com

The Spa at Copperwynd Resort and Club is the only resort to tap the nearby Four Peaks mountain range to develop a 90-minute rejuvenation therapy employing precious purple amethyst. The Amethyst Body Renewal incorporates the historical power of this ancient gem, long believed by early societies to be a force of renewal and rejuvenation balancing energies in the body.  Amethyst is placed on the body to balance the energies of the chakras and reinforce intuition, which is followed by a stimulating full body brushing and exfoliation designed to help remove toxins by jump-starting the lymphatic system. Guests are then misted with amethyst water and slightly cocooned after the application of a regenerating cream. A hot stone massage and the application of Amethyst Body Lotion, a Copperwynd exclusive, leaves the body glowing and sparkling both inside and out.  www.copperwynd.com

FIT FOR A QUEEN

The Javanese Lulur Royal Treatment at Caleo Resort & Spa is a regal preparation inspired from the Central Palaces of Java. The treatment begins with a Balinese massage and jasmine frangipani scented flower oil and continues with an invigorating skin scrub including turmeric, rice, sandalwood and jasmine. The body is then slathered with a cool yogurt splash followed by an aromatic shower. Guests can enjoy herbal tea while soaking in a copper tub infused with rose petals. Finally, a jasmine frangipani lotion is applied leaving the skin cleansed with an exotic flower scent.  www.caleoresort.com

MASSAGE WITH MEDICINAL HERBS

The luk pra kope offered at The Sanctuary Spa at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain has been used in Thailand for centuries. To begin the treatment, feet are soaked in a fresh lime and essential oil bath, followed by a cooling exfoliation with fine, white Thai clay and fresh lime. Combined with Thai massage, a medicinal blend of steamy, organically grown herbs are rolled, massaged and pressed into tight muscles and problem areas. The heated compress soothes sore and aching muscles, enhances circulation, reduces joint stiffness and refreshes skin.  www.sanctuaryaz.com

RELIEF OFF THE COURSE

The Golf Specialty Massage at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North incorporates stretching and therapeutic massage techniques to relieve stress and tension in the muscles. Warm golf balls are rolled along the large muscles on either side of the spine and down the neck, similar to hot stones, but heated to a reduced temperature. The golf balls help to diminish tension in these areas, making it ideal for relieving golf related stiffness.  www.fourseasons.com/Scottsdale

REJOICING IN NATURE’S HONEY

The Desert Nectar Honey Wrap at The Spa at Camelback Inn, A JW Marriott Resort & Spa locks in moisture and leaves the skin gleaming by using a blend of pure Arizona honey, fresh buttermilk and natural oats. As the creamy, rich ingredients of the wrap soak in, the scalp is massaged and conditioned with a natural, fragrant blend of essential oils. The body is then unwrapped, rinsed with warm water, and a milk-enriched cream is applied to further hydrate. To seal in moisture, the body is sprayed with conditioner of aloe vera and chamomile. The body treatment is followed by a facial using orange blossom water, honey almond exfoliation and a massage with lavender oil. A cucumber mask incorporating whole-leaf aloe vera and vitamins A and E soften and smooth the face. www.camelbackinn.com

AN OASIS IN THE DESERT

Based on the natural botanicals of the desert, the Havasupai Body Oasis Experience at Willow Stream The Spa at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess begins with a relaxing shower beneath a waterfall. The spa therapist guides you to your private oasis for a warm, aromatic eucalyptus footbath. Sip restoring desert tea while a lavender-infused cloth cleanses the face. Continue with a gentle chamomile exfoliation for rejuvenation, a eucalyptus herbal bath and a waterfall shower to capture the clarity of the sacred place. Enjoy an aromatherapy wrap with a face and scalp massage, leaving the mind clear and the body relaxed. www.fairmont.com/Scottsdale
