SOI 4 BANGKOK EATERY ADDS EXOTIC FRUIT TO WINTER MENU

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz—November 28, 2011 — Known as the “fuzzy melon, white gourd or ash gourd” the hard to find winter melon arrives at Soi 4 Bangkok Eatery in Scottsdale this holiday season.

The winter menu will include the new Pla Rad Kang dish that incorporates the fruit adding a savory, slightly sweetened, taste. The specialty dish is served with Grilled Salmon Steak, Winter Melon, Basil and Red Curry for the price of $16.00.

The winter melon is a vine grown for its very large fruit but it’s actually eaten as a vegetable when it’s mature. The fruit is fuzzy when it’s young and has a thick white flesh that is sweet when eaten. By maturity, the fruit loses its hairs and develops a waxy coating, giving the rise to the name wax gourd, providing a long shelf life. The melon may grow as large as eighty centimetres in length. Although the fruit is referred to as a “melon” the fully grown crop is not sweet. Originally cultivated in Southeast Asia, the winter melon is now widely grown in East Asia and South Asia as well.

The winter melon is also used to make soup in the same way as daikon radishes combined with pork or beef; used to make curries, produce fruit drinks when combined with caramelized sugar such as tea as well as dried and sweetened during New Year festivals. The winter melon requires very warm weather to grow but can be kept through the winter much like winter squash.
