The Yoga of Walking
by Cheryl Yale-Bruedigam

Lungs are working, breath
is flowing, legs are moving, hips are opening, body is
balanced. Is walking yoga? Yes, it can be. Walking is a
wonderful way to bring this easy and much needed daily
practice into your yoga or if you are already a walker,
to bring the beauty of yoga into your daily walk. If you
do neither, you will want to add the yoga of walking to
your daily routine.
What makes walking yoga?
Awareness, breath, mind; all flowing with the movement
and rhythm of your body in motion.
If you already walk for
fitness or weight loss, you may want to time out your
destination so that you can walk freely in mental tune
without having to worry about how much time you have
done or how much distance you have covered. If not, then
you may just want to allow yourself the freedom to flow
with the fates.
Do an easy
standing
forward bend before venturing out to loosen your
legs and back. Start with what you can comfortably
manage and work up to forty-five minutes a day.
Stay in awareness of your
body and mind and surroundings, breathing in and
exhaling in a natural rhythm. Each step is a part of the
meditative process of yoga. Begin by clearing the mind
and focusing upon your walk, your step and your posture.
This is an excellent time to bring in your favorite
chants, prayer or affirmations to repeat in sync and
mindfulness with each step. Enjoy the sights, the
smells, the earth beneath your feet, the sky above.
Revel in the beauty of your own flow with nature.
If you're feeling doubly
active, get a
sling-back carry case for your mat, take
it with you and do a few poses somewhere along the way!
