From the Editor
September 2007 is a welcome time! After an exceptionally
hot and humid summer, fall is indeed welcome to the
southwest this year.
This fall marks many personal milestones for me. Twenty
years ago next month, I lost my grandmother who had
raised me from ten months. This month our family lost an
elderly woman who a cousin to me, was also one of my
life’s strongest inspirations.

Geneva Green no doubt preparing a
scrumptious menu or grading papers
Geneva Green was my second cousin and as an exemplary
teacher and hospitable hostess, she not only smoothed
the way for many others but for myself as well. In the
sixties Green left Texas to run a family lodge,
Sportsman's Lodge, in Red River, New Mexico, with her
husband and daughter while continuing her teaching. It
was those childhood visits to Green and their lodge that
set the course of my path and established my love for
New Mexico and the Southwest, and she is a big part, if
not the sole reason, I sit here writing from my home in
New Mexico today. She inspired the craft of writing and
expected only the best from each individual. She
touched many lives. She was the true example of a
southern woman; offering food, conversation, knowledge,
wisdom and insight to all she encountered. No one ever
left her home or her presence hungry or unenlightened. I
honor her in her life and in her passing.
Please join me this month and together we can explore
much of the goodness the southwest has to offer in the
fall. We will follow our bliss to the Centre for Well
Being, look at cowboy artists and their work, learn how
a former flight attendant chucked her career to become a
Taos designer, trek from Colorado to southwestern New
Mexico for exciting September events, and we have
information on putting together your own fall craft
schedule for exciting holiday gift-making.
